Hand is the part of upper extremity that provides us the power to perform multiple activities varying in dexterity. Comprising of 27 bones and five fingers, the hand has incredible motion flexibility and uniqueness.
Relate to severe damage that occur in the joints, tendons, ligaments and bones of the delicate structure of hand and mar their functioning such as Tendon Disorders and Injury, Arthritis, Ganglion Cysts, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Congenital Hand Disorders, Fractures and Dislocations and many more such conditions that affect the hand are thereby treated by the hand surgeon with caution and skill.
Hand surgeon ensures early restoration and grafting of the nerves of the hand less they might affect the sensations on hand.
With an experience of 25 years (AIIMS) in the field and more than 6000 surgeries, Dr. Vikas’s application of surgical techniques seem effortless with each movement having a purpose. He has an excellent insight and is never satisfied with an average performance.
Case operated by Dr. Vikas Gupta covered by National Geographic Team for serial "Emergency Room". This video highlights careless attitude can lead to grievous injuries which can lead to permanent disability and these if treated properly on time can bring back person towards normal life.....
Many disorders and injuries of the hand are treated by conservative techniques that involve oral anti inflammatory medication, steroid injections to relieve patient of painful condition, physiotherapy exercises that provide relaxation and stretch the stiff tissues of hand along with recommendations to bring about modifications in activities that cause pain. The relief in each case varies and is temporary if the condition is severe. Conditions such as fractures and dislocations, that require treatment by splinting / bracing are also methodically taken to task by the hand surgeon.
Under this technique artificial joints made of pyrocarbon are replaced with the damaged joints by surgery where the hand surgeon cements in the artificial joint to bring back movement and sensation n the hand. Hand Arthroplasty is performed partially or totally to replace joints damaged by rheumatoid arthritis, degenerative joint disease, instability of the hand joint, severe fractures and /or post traumatic arthritis.
Minimally invasive technique which is conducted by making small incisions in the hand. The hand surgeon inserts a telescope like device and repairs the ligaments or tendons inside the injured / damaged hand. This is basically an outpatient surgery and usually performed for carpal tunnel release or to release contractions in tissues and conditions derailing movement in hand.
Severe fractures and dislocations are treated by open or closed reduction method by the hand surgeon. Under open reduction method the fracture is held by screws and plates and multiple break in the bones are treated by exposing, reducing and then fixing the fracture.
In cases where the severity is intense, the fracture is treated by closed reduction method by inserting pins in the bone and joining it by rod/ other pins after preparing a frame and then tightening it by a traction thereby helping the fractures to heal subsequently.
For painful cysts or knuckle joints, new modality techniques such as fusion (plates, screws or wires) or excision ( dressing and stitching with elevating the fingers) is performed by the hand surgeon to rid the patient of the pain. Mild movement is permitted on the same day of this minimal surgical technique to bring back stability to the hand.
Severe and significant injuries and deformities which are irreparable by arthroscopy and other conservative methodologies are treated by open and lengthy surgery to provide relief to the patient. This may take a few hours depending on the complexity of the injury or disorder of the hand tissues, bones or ligaments.
